Auto parts trade up 33% to Dh5.3b

The latest Statistics released by Dubai World indicated a year on year 30 per cent increase in Dubai's total direct trade in auto parts and accessories which were valued at Dh 18.2 billion in 2007. Dubai's automobile spare parts trading sector recorded an impressive growth of 29.64 per cent in 2007 for a value of Dh18.22 billion, compared with Dh14.05 billion in 2006, according to figures released Sunday by Dubai World's Statistics Department. The high standards of living and increasing population in Dubai have led to the dynamic growth of the automotive sector. The UAE's automobile finance market is worth an estimated US$2.3 billion (Dh8.45bn), according to industry figures. A report published by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) says the auto finance market has flourished in recent years, leading to banks and companies offering flexible financing contracts with extended repayment periods. The UAE capital is facing a massive increase in vehicular traffic, as a result of a 650 per cent increase in the number of cars from 2001 to 2006. The rise in the number of vehicles is also one of the major causes of traffic jams and accidents. Trade in automobile spare parts through Dubai recorded a 40 per cent growth in 2005 over the previous year, according to official statistics. Between 2000 and 2005, the auto spare parts trade in Dubai increased by 155 per cent, Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) figures show. A new industrial area under Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (Jafza) is being set up in Dubai at a cost of Dh2 billion to house companies dealing in vehicles and related service and spare parts industries. Continuous increase in fuel prices is changing families' driving habits in the UAE. In a recent online consumer poll conducted by ACNielsen among 23,500 regular Internet users in 42 countries, almost half of the respondents in the UAE said they try to use their vehicles less, to control their fuel expenses, according to a press release. Recent statistics confirmed that the volume of Dubai's trade in cars will reach more than 368,000 by the end of current year. The total value of the emirate's car imports in the current year has been more than Dh15.8 billion, registering a growth rate of 63 per cent compared with last year. Two private sector projects worth a total of Dh8.84 billion announced in Abu Dhabi yesterday will create a combination offshore automobile and tourism complex and the region's first automobile hub, respectively. Sharjah to impound neglected vehicles

Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Municipality, has issued an administrative order concerning penalties and fines for deserting vehicles in public areas and on main roads. Dubai's automobile and vehicle imports posted a record growth of 48 per cent in 2000 over 1999, thanks to the boom in the local economy and non-oil sectors.
