Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, attended the premiere of the acclaimed play The Return of the Phoenix presented by the Rahbani family on Wednesday as part of "Eid in Dubai" celebrations.
Sheikh Majid was welcomed by Laila Suhail, CEO of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) Office, and Ebrahim Saleh, Coordinator General of the DSF Office.

Dubai's fabulous foursome, Um Khammas, Um Allawi, Um Saloom and Um Saeed – or collectively known as the lovable but cranky, animated old girls of Freej – are set to storm the stage after creating quite a stir on television.

The curtain rose yesterday on the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, an event that seeks to celebrate young theatre talent in the UAE. Over the next ten days, the Festival promises a rare treat for theatre lovers. Being held from August 10-20, the Festival will present a new play in Arabic each night at 9pm. Entry to all the plays is free of charge. The event is being organised at the premises of the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai's Al Mamzar area.

HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah, reiterated that the Arab Theatres Authority (ATA), is not a mere traditional institution, but a new institution tasked to revive community role of the theatre to confront challenges faced by Arabs, notably recover of occupied Palestine.

About 50 years have passed since the first play was staged in the UAE. A researcher in the history of Emirati theatre, Abdul Elah Abdul Qader, puts 1958 as the actual start of formal theatre acts. Two plays were staged that year by youths at Al Shaab Club in Sharjah and the other one in Dubai. But it was hard times for the theatre movement till 1963, the year Watheq Al Samaraei, an Iraqi artist, came to the UAE to supervise some plays and hold workshops.

Emirati plays help strengthen UAE theatre Posted on 24/07/2007
The theatrical season started yesterday with the opening of Al Buqsha at the Cultural Foundation. This step is in cooperation between the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and the Theatrical Association. The season will continue for two weeks during which six plays will be staged, starting at 8pm. The same plays will be shown in Sharjah.
